January 2013

The Knox Trail Council is very pleased to announce that we have sucess with our new Merit Badge Counselor list.  The list currently has over 300 counselors and is updated on an ongoing basis – with changes instantly available online.  The list is through Doubleknot, a secure site with a logon and password.  The list and access information will not be on the Knox Trail Council website and we have requested that Troops not put it on their sites.  Information has been mailed to Scoutmasters and Troop Committee Chairs on the new system.

Merit Badge Counselor Registration Requirements

The National BSA has changed the leadership requirements for all leaders and requires that everyone take Youth Protection Training every 2 years.  National also requires that all leaders re-register every year.

Each registration within the BSA requires a separate application.  This includes the CORI form, Photo ID & Youth Protection Certificate.  Merit Badge Counselors are not unit registrations, but District level registrations.

The following documents are required to register as a Merit Badge Counselor in the Knox Trail Council (per National BSA):

Ψ      Knox Trail Council Merit Badge Counselor Application – newly updated January 17, 2013.

Annual Registration

Counselors must reregister annually - this does not mean a new application, only to reply to the email about renewing.

Troop Only Counselors

The Knox Trail Council does not support the idea of “Our Troop Only” Counselors – any counselor is free to decline working with Scouts that call from outside their unit – however we would hope that you would be willing to work with any Scout who contacts you.

Online Training System

The Boy Scouts of America has many of its training session available online.  All you need to do is go to: www.myscouting.org and follow the instructions to create an account.  You will need your Member ID # which is under your name and address on the first page of this letter.  You can then take the Youth Protection Training and when finished print out the certificate to send with the other paperwork.

Again, we appreciate what you are doing for our Scouts, and in doing this you are assisting us meet our requirements to make sure our Scouts can continue to work on their advancement in a safe, appropriate environment.

If you have any questions or need help with any of the paperwork, please contact John Fortini, our Office Manager, at the Knox Trail Council Office by phone or email at John.Fortini@Scouting.org.
